New Year Offers, New Year Breaks in Devon From thatched cottages with blazing wood fires, to family owned bed and breakfast overlooking a flooded river valley, to fine hotels above a marina offering a glass of mulled wine upon welcome, with champagne, cocktails and canapés, and a piper to see out the old year Devon has lots of ideas for a New Year Holidays break.
Dartmouth rivals Bideford as the venue, not just in Devon but in the UK, to see in the New Year. Thousands of revelers, nearly all in fancy dress crowd the narrow streets and Embankment waiting expectantly for the Church bells to sound midnight and the start of another year. Restaurants, hotels and bed and breakfast are usually fully booked months ahead.
Bideford New Year's Eve. Like Dartmouth (and Looe and St Ives in Cornwall) the town is one of those places where thousands of people in fancy dress choose to see in the New Year. From grown men in nappies to ladies in rabbit costumes. If you can think of it someone will be wearing it. All the Quayside Inns are packed, many admission by advance ticket only. People mingle and dance in the streets. Come Midnight they all gather on the medieval Long Bridge waiting for the parish church bells to ring in the New Year. Up to twenty thousand revelers make their way to this ancient Devon Town.
Xmas and New Year in Devon in style. Though restaurants will be fully booked well in advance how about treating your nearest and dearest to a romantic break with at least one candlelit dinner for two? For main course glazed ham with roasted baby parsnips; or locally caught sea bass with new potatoes; or medallions of Westcountry beef with peppercorns and mustard.
Try and beat the hangover with a walk on the Dartmoor. Stop off for a turkey curry or sandwich in a pub, with log fire blazing? Or explore one of the many Devon villages? Join the crowds at the start of the New Year Sales in Exeter or Plymouth. Many hotels and guesthouses have special New Year Offers, but expect demand for accommodation to be high so book early.
